Prof Peter Gumbsch heads the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM in Freiburg and the Institute for Applied Materials - Reliability and Microstructure at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

His field of research is concerned with investigating the behaviour of materials under stress and the limits of their resilience. The investigation covers the structure and properties of a wide range of materials, from their atomic structure to their macroscopic behaviour, with the aim of making materials and components safer, more reliable and more durable and improving the material and energy efficiency of technical systems.
